How to Use My Textbooks | SURF

Definitions

• Primary materials and Primary course materials refer to the materials used in a course section to provide the content required as indicated by the textbook examples listed in the Course Outline of Record. It is understood that faculty often provide supplemental material such as website links, journal articles from the library, and so on, in addition to a course section’s primary material. Such supplemental material need not be considered when selecting your course material category here.

• Open Educational Resources are materials shared under the public domain or a Creative Commons license that allows for free use, modification, and sharing.

My textbooks is the place in SURF where faculty can identify their classes that have a Zero or Low Textbook
Cost associated with them. By identifying these courses, students will be able to search and view these classes
in SURF using the Class Search or by going to the Current ZTC/LTC Classes website.

• At the home webpage, click the LOG IN TO SURF button. Next, enter your SURF ID and Password on the
  MiraCosta Portal Login prompt, and click the Login button.

• At the top left click Main Menu > Self Service > Faculty Center > My Textbooks.

  • Go to My Schedule, change term to view class sections of other terms.

• Select the appropriate option for course materials under the Course Attribute Value drop down box. Select Save Updates to save changes.

  • Primary materials are OER (ZTC) – The primary course materials are Open Educational Resources.

  • Primary materials are free but not OER (ZTC) – The primary course materials are freely available, but do not
    meet the definition of OER.

  • Primary materials are a mix of OER and free (ZTC) – The primary course materials are comprised of a mix of
    OER and other materials that are not OER but have no cost for the students.

  • No course material (ZTC) – Section has no required course materials

  • Primary materials have cost paid by college (ZTC) – The primary course materials have a cost covered by
    the college or system, so that they are free for students.

  • Low Textbook Cost Materials (LTC) – The primary course materials may be purchased new for $40 or less in
    the MiraCosta bookstore.

  • MiraCosta Bookstore Materials ‐ Course content materials are available via MiraCosta's Follett bookstore. Requires
    entry of course materials via the following link: MiraCosta Bookstore.

Class Search View

Using the Class Search, a student will now be able to see all ZTC and LTC classes in the search results pages.
ZTC and LTC classes are identified with the icons shown in the below.
